Flykra Short Animation

A story about the impact of climate change.

The Soren Stone and the Legend of Flykra takes place in Flykra, a village of snow trolls. Upon figuring out that areas of the town are melting, the land keeper is tasked with the treacherous journey of finding the Soren Stone, an ancient stone that will encase Flykra in an ice shield and save the trolls from extinction.

Initial World Building Sketch

My inspiration came from German culture, seen in the incorporation of traditional architecture and blackletter typography. I emphasized traditional imagery to suggest the rich history of Flykra, helping the viewer understand why the land keeper must save the village.

As for the characters themselves, I looked to Icelandic folklore. The trolls are depicted as miniature beings, modeled off of elves, rather than the traditional large-scale depictions of Icelandic trolls. This shift in imagery acts to show how climate change affects aspects of our lives that may seem naked to the visible eye.

The village name, Flykra, originates from the word ‘snowflake’ in Nordic, adding to the narrative of the fleeting cold weather and the fragility of the environment.

Storyboard Sketch

All scenes were hand-drawn and animated in Procreate and Adobe After Effects. The additional sound was added with Adobe Premiere Pro with the narration from VoiceMaker.In.

Colors for the animation were inspired by the film, Frozen, where the vibrant and saturated colors contrast with the typical green, brown, and orange palettes associated with climate change iconography.
